Indications:
Prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease caused by 13 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae
Prevention of pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis in infants, children, adults, and immunocompromised patients
Recommended for infants, toddlers, older adults, and at-risk populations
Pharmacology:
PREVENAR 13 contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 13 pneumococcal serotypes conjugated to a carrier protein (CRM197). This conjugation elicits a strong immune response and helps produce protective antibodies against pneumococcal infections.
Dosage:
Single 0.5 mL dose administered intramuscularly
Schedule depends on age and clinical condition; often given in a series for infants and young children
Administration:
Administer by deep intramuscular injection, typically in the deltoid muscle or anterolateral thigh
Should be given by healthcare professionals trained in vaccine administration
Avoid intravenous or subcutaneous injection
Interaction:
Can be co-administered with other routine vaccines at separate injection sites
No significant adverse interactions reported
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to any vaccine component
Severe allergic reaction to a previous pneumococcal conjugate vaccine dose
Side Effects:
Common: pain, redness, swelling at injection site
Systemic: fever, irritability, fatigue
Rare allergic reactions: rash, anaphylaxis (very rare)
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed during pregnancy; data limited
