FERAL is indicated for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia caused by various conditions such as pregnancy, blood loss, poor nutrition, or malabsorption. It replenishes iron stores and supports hemoglobin synthesis.

Pharmacology:
FERAL contains ferrous sulfate (or ferrous fumarate depending on formulation), an essential mineral required for the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells. Iron facilitates oxygen transport in the blood and is vital for cellular metabolism.

Dosage:
Typical dose is 1 tablet (usually 100-200 mg elemental iron) once or twice daily with meals or as directed by the physician.

Administration:
Take orally with water. To enhance absorption, take on an empty stomach if tolerated; otherwise, with food to reduce gastrointestinal irritation. Avoid concurrent intake with calcium, antacids, or dairy products.

Interaction:
May interact with antacids, tetracycline, doxycycline, and levodopa reducing iron absorption. Vitamin C can enhance iron uptake.

Contraindications:
Not to be used in patients with hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, or known hypersensitivity to iron preparations.

Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, constipation, dark stools, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea. Severe allergic reactions are rare.

Pregnancy & Lactation:
Generally considered safe and beneficial during pregnancy and lactation to prevent or treat anemia, but use under medical supervision.
