Indications:
Relief of constipation (as an oral laxative) and dry or irritated skin (as a topical emollient).
Pharmacology:
Liquid paraffin is a refined mineral oil that works by softening stools and lubricating the bowel, aiding smooth passage. Topically, it hydrates and protects the skin by forming a moisture-retaining layer.
Dosage:
Oral (Laxative Use):
Adults: 15–30 ml at bedtime.
Children: As directed by a physician.
Topical (Skin Use):
Apply a thin layer to the affected area 1-2 times daily or as advised.
Administration:
For oral use, take with water. For skin use, apply externally on clean, dry skin.
Interaction:
May interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).
Should not be taken at the same time as other oral medications due to reduced absorption.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to mineral oils
Intestinal obstruction or appendicitis
Nausea or vomiting
Children under 3 years (for oral use)
Side Effects:
Abdominal cramps
Rectal leakage
Lipid pneumonia if aspirated
Impaired absorption of nutrients with long-term use
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use cautiously; not advised for long-term use. Should be used only when clearly needed and under physician supervision.
Precautions & Warnings:
