Indications:
ATROPIN 0.6 MG is indicated for:
Treating bradycardia (abnormally slow heart rate)
Reducing salivary and respiratory secretions before surgery
Antidote in organophosphate or carbamate poisoning
Reversal of muscarinic effects of cholinergic agents
Pharmacology:
Atropine is a competitive antagonist of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors. It blocks parasympathetic stimulation, leading to increased heart rate, reduced glandular secretions, and bronchodilation. It readily crosses the blood-brain barrier and can also affect central nervous system functions in higher doses.
Dosage:
Bradycardia: 0.5–1 mg IV every 3–5 minutes as needed (maximum: 3 mg)
Preoperative Use: 0.3–0.6 mg IM/IV/SC 30–60 minutes before anesthesia
Organophosphate Poisoning: 2–4 mg IV initially; repeat every 5–10 minutes until muscarinic symptoms subside
Dosage must be individualized based on patient condition and indication.
Administration:
Can be administered intravenously (IV), intramuscularly (IM), or subcutaneously (SC)
Monitor cardiac and respiratory status closely
Use aseptic technique during injection
Interaction:
May interact with other anticholinergics, increasing side effects
Can enhance the action of adrenergic drugs
Potentiated by tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, and MAO inhibitors
Avoid use with potassium chloride tablets due to risk of GI injury
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to atropine or any component of the formulation
Glaucoma (especially narrow-angle)
Obstructive uropathy or gastrointestinal obstruction
Myasthenia gravis (unless used to treat side effects of anticholinesterases)
Side Effects:
Common: Dry mouth, blurred vision, tachycardia, urinary retention, constipation
Serious: Confusion, hallucinations, increased intraocular pressure, arrhythmias
Seek immediate medical attention if signs of overdose occur (e.g., hot, dry skin, delirium, or pupil dilation).
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Category C – Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Lactation: Atropine is excreted in breast milk; caution advised, especially in nursing infants.
Therapeutic Class:
Anticholinergics (Systemic)
Storage Conditions:
Store below 25°C
Protect from light and moisture
Keep in original packaging
Keep out of reach of children
Do not use if solution appears cloudy or contains particles
