Indications:

NORET 28 is indicated for:

• Regular use as an oral contraceptive (especially for women who cannot take estrogen)

• Management of menstrual disorders, such as irregular periods, heavy bleeding, or amenorrhea

• Sometimes used in the treatment of endometriosis or premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

Pharmacology:

NORET 28 contains Norethisterone, a synthetic progestin that mimics the effects of natural progesterone. It works by:

• Inhibiting ovulation

• Thickening cervical mucus to block sperm

• Altering the endometrium to prevent implantation

Because it contains no estrogen, it is suitable for breastfeeding mothers and women with estrogen-related risks.

Dosage:

• One tablet daily, taken continuously without any breaks (28-day cycle)

• Should be taken at the same time every day for consistent contraceptive effectiveness

• Start on the first day of menstruation or as directed by a healthcare provider

Administration:

• Take orally with or without food

• Swallow whole with water

• Missing a pill by more than 3 hours may reduce its effectiveness; use backup contraception if this occurs

Interaction:

May interact with:

• Enzyme-inducing drugs: rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine

• HIV medications: ritonavir, efavirenz

• Herbal remedies: especially St. John’s Wort

These may reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive. Always consult your doctor when starting a new medication.

Contraindications:

• Known or suspected pregnancy

• History of thromboembolic disorders

• Liver disease or liver tumors

• Hormone-sensitive cancers (e.g., breast cancer)

• Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding

• Hypersensitivity to norethisterone

Side Effects:

Common:

• Irregular menstrual bleeding

• Headache

• Breast tenderness

• Mood swings

• Nausea

Serious (rare):

• Blood clots

• Liver dysfunction

• Allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation:

• Pregnancy: Contraindicated

• Lactation: Generally considered safe during breastfeeding; minimal transfer into breast milk
