Indications:
ESOHIL 20 mg is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, erosive esophagitis, and for prevention of NSAID-induced ulcers.
Pharmacology:
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that selectively inhibits the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells. This blocks the final step in acid production, thereby reducing gastric acidity.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: 20 mg once daily, preferably before a meal.
Duration and frequency depend on the indication.
Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew.
Interaction:
May interact with drugs such as atazanavir, clopidogrel, warfarin, diazepam, and digoxin. May reduce absorption of drugs requiring acidic pH (e.g., ketoconazole, iron salts).
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole or any PPI
Severe liver impairment (with caution)
Co-administration with nelfinavir
Side Effects:
Headache, abdominal pain, flatulence
Constipation or diarrhea
Nausea, dry mouth
Long-term use may cause vitamin B12 deficiency, magnesium imbalance, or bone fractures
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use with caution during pregnancy; animal studies do not show harm, but human data is limited. Excreted in breast milk; consult a physician before use.
Precautions & Warnings:
Long-term therapy may require monitoring for magnesium, calcium, and vitamin B12 levels
Evaluate for gastric malignancy before starting therapy in symptomatic patients
Use with caution in patients with liver disease
