Indications:
RISPONEX 4 MG is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia, acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder, and irritability associated with autism spectrum disorders.
Pharmacology:
Risperidone is a selective monoaminergic antagonist with a high affinity for serotonin type 2 (5HT2) and dopamine type 2 (D2) receptors. It also binds to alpha-1, alpha-2 adrenergic, and H1 histaminergic receptors, contributing to its antipsychotic effects.
Dosage:
Adults: Typically 2–6 mg/day in divided doses.
Dose may be adjusted based on clinical response.
Elderly and children: Lower starting dose, as per physician's advice.
Administration:
Should be taken orally, with or without food.
Administer at the same time each day for consistent therapeutic effect.
Interaction:
Caution with CNS depressants, antihypertensives, levodopa, dopamine agonists, carbamazepine, and CYP2D6 inhibitors (e.g. fluoxetine, paroxetine).
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Risperidone
Patients with dementia-related psychosis due to increased risk of cerebrovascular events
Side Effects:
Common: Drowsiness, weight gain, anxiety, extrapyramidal symptoms, dizziness
Rare: Tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, increased prolactin levels
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk.
Risperidone is excreted in breast milk; breastfeeding should be avoided during treatment.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, seizures, or diabetes.
Monitor for signs of suicidal thoughts, metabolic changes, and movement disorders.
Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
