Indications:
Lubilax is indicated for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in women aged 18 years and older.
Pharmacology:
Lubilax contains Lubiprostone, a chloride channel activator that increases intestinal fluid secretion. It acts locally on the apical membrane of the gastrointestinal epithelium to enhance a chloride-rich fluid secretion, which helps soften stools and stimulate bowel movements without altering serum electrolyte concentrations.
Dosage & Administration:
For CIC: 24 mcg twice daily with food and water.
For IBS-C: 8 mcg twice daily with food and water.
Capsules should be swallowed whole and not broken or chewed.
Interaction:
No significant drug interactions have been reported. However, concomitant use with methadone may reduce the efficacy of Lubiprostone.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction. Not recommended for use in pediatric patients.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, headache, and dizziness. In rare cases, dyspnea may occur shortly after the first dose.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Lubiprostone is categorized as pregnancy category C. Caution is advised if administered to breastfeeding mothers as it is unknown whether the drug passes into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with severe diarrhea. If severe symptoms develop, discontinue use. Monitor for signs of allergic reaction.
Therapeutic Class:
Laxatives, specifically chloride channel activators.
Storage Conditions:
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
