Indications:
Metro is indicated for:
Treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections (e.g., intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections)
Protozoal infections such as amoebiasis, giardiasis, and trichomoniasis
Bacterial vaginosis and pelvic inflammatory disease
Used in combination with other antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori eradication
Pharmacology:
Metronidazole acts by entering the anaerobic microorganism and disrupting its DNA, leading to cell death. It is effective against obligate anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa.
Dosage & Administration:
Typical adult dose: 400 mg orally every 8 to 12 hours depending on infection severity
Should be taken with food or milk to reduce gastrointestinal irritation
Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve
Interaction:
Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after (disulfiram-like reaction)
May increase effects of warfarin and lithium
Interaction with phenobarbital and phenytoin may reduce metronidazole levels
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives
First trimester of pregnancy (use only if clearly necessary)
Use cautiously in patients with CNS disorders
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, metallic taste, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain
Rare: Seizures, peripheral neuropathy, hypersensitivity reactions, dark urine
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if benefits outweigh risks in pregnancy, especially after the first trimester
Metronidazole is excreted in breast milk; caution advised during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor for signs of peripheral neuropathy and CNS effects
Avoid alcohol to prevent adverse reactions
Caution in patients with liver impairment
Therapeutic Class:
Nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent

Store below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
