Pharmacology:

• Lidocaine is a fast-acting local anesthetic that blocks sodium channels in nerve membranes, preventing nerve signal transmission and inducing numbness.

• Adrenaline (Epinephrine) acts as a vasoconstrictor, reducing local blood flow, prolonging the anesthetic effect, and minimizing bleeding at the site.

Dosage:

• Dosage depends on procedure, area of administration, and patient weight.

• Typically, up to 3-5 mg/kg of Lidocaine is used, with caution not to exceed maximum limits.

• Always administered by trained professionals.

Administration:

• Administered via subcutaneous, intradermal, or infiltration injection.

• Aspiration before injection is necessary to avoid intravascular administration.

Interaction:

• Caution with beta-blockers, MAO inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, and other vasopressors

• Risk of arrhythmia when used with volatile anesthetics

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to amide-type local anesthetics or adrenaline

• Severe hypertension or cardiovascular disease

• Hyperthyroidism

• Areas with end arteries (e.g., fingers, toes, penis) where vasoconstriction may cause ischemia

Side Effects:

• Local: Pain, redness, swelling at injection site

• Systemic (if accidentally injected intravascularly or in overdose):

  • Dizziness, nervousness, tremors

  • Seizures

  • Cardiac arrhythmias

  • Hypertension or hypotension

  • Allergic reactions (rare)

Pregnancy & Lactation:

• Use with caution during pregnancy—only if clearly needed

• Safe in lactation with proper medical guidance

Precautions & Warnings:
