Indications:
Preoperative skin and mucous membrane disinfection
Wound cleaning and infection prevention
Minor cuts, burns, and abrasions
Treatment of superficial skin infections
Umbilical cord care in newborns
Pharmacology:
Povidone-iodine is a complex of iodine that slowly releases free iodine. This iodine penetrates microbial cells and disrupts protein and nucleic acid structure, leading to the death of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Dosage:
Apply 1–3 times daily to the affected area, or as directed
For mucosal use or sensitive skin, dilution may be recommended
Administration:
For external use only
Clean area before applying
Use directly or with sterile gauze
Avoid contact with eyes
Interaction:
Do not use with silver-containing products (e.g., silver sulfadiazine)
May interfere with thyroid function tests if used extensively
Contraindications:
Known allergy to iodine or povidone-iodine
Thyroid disorders (consult a physician)
Not for continuous use on large open wounds without medical supervision
Side Effects:
Mild skin irritation or burning sensation
Allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling)
Temporary staining of skin and fabrics
Rarely, iodine absorption causing thyroid imbalance
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Safe for short-term topical use during pregnancy and lactation
Avoid applying over large areas or under occlusive dressings
Precautions & Warnings:
Not for prolonged use over large body areas
Stop using if signs of allergy appear
Avoid ingestion or application near eyes
