Indications:
Allergic rhinitis
Bronchial asthma (prophylactic use)
Chronic urticaria
Atopic dermatitis
Allergic conjunctivitis
Pharmacology:
Ketotifen is a non-competitive H1-antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer. It prevents the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine and leukotrienes, thereby controlling allergic reactions and preventing asthma symptoms.
Dosage:
Children (6 months–3 years): 0.05 mg/kg twice daily
Children (3 years and above): 1 mg (5 ml) twice daily
Adults: 1 mg (5 ml) twice daily, or as directed by physician
Should be taken with food to reduce drowsiness
Administration:
Shake well before use
Use the provided measuring cup or spoon
Regular use is important for asthma prevention (not for acute attacks)
Interaction:
May enhance the sedative effect of CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, sleeping pills)
Caution when used with oral antidiabetics (rare thrombocytopenia risk)
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Ketotifen or any component of the syrup
Not for acute asthma attacks
Side Effects:
Drowsiness (especially in first few days)
Dry mouth
Weight gain (with long-term use)
Irritability or mild CNS symptoms in children
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use in pregnancy only if clearly necessary
Caution advised during breastfeeding, as small amounts may pass into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid driving or operating machinery if drowsiness occurs
Gradual withdrawal is recommended if used long-term
Not a substitute for rescue inhalers in asthma attacks
