Indications:
Minor cuts and abrasions
Superficial burns
Skin infections
Bed sores
Surgical incisions (under medical supervision)
Diabetic foot ulcers (supportive care)
Pharmacology:
Povidone-iodine slowly releases free iodine when applied to skin. This iodine penetrates microbial cells, disrupting proteins and nucleic acids, resulting in microbial death. It is effective against a wide spectrum of pathogens including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. The cream base provides moisture balance and helps in faster healing.
Dosage:
Apply a thin layer 1–3 times daily or as directed by a physician
May be covered with a sterile dressing if required
Administration:
For external use only
Clean the affected area gently before application
Do not apply inside eyes, nose, or deep wounds without medical advice
Interaction:
Avoid using with other antiseptics containing silver, hydrogen peroxide, or mercury
Excessive use may affect thyroid function tests
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone
Thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, goiter)
Not recommended for large, open wounds without supervision
Side Effects:
Mild skin irritation or burning
Rash or allergic dermatitis (rare)
Temporary skin staining
Rare: systemic absorption in long-term or extensive use
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Can be used cautiously during pregnancy and lactation for small surface areas
Avoid prolonged or extensive use without doctor's advice
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid long-term use over large areas
Discontinue if irritation or allergic reaction occurs
Do not use near eyes or mucous membranes
