Indications:
Betadine 10% Solution is indicated for the prevention and treatment of infections in minor wounds, cuts, burns, abrasions, and ulcers. It is also used for preoperative skin disinfection and as a surgical scrub.
Pharmacology:
The active ingredient, povidone-iodine, releases iodine upon application, which penetrates microbial cell walls, leading to cell death. It is effective against a broad spectrum of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Dosage:
Topical Application: Apply directly to the affected area 1 to 3 times daily.
Gargle/Mouthwash: Use 10 ml diluted with an equal volume of warm water, gargle for 30 seconds, up to 4 times daily.
Administration:
Clean the affected area and apply Betadine 10% Solution directly. Do not dilute unless directed. For mouthwash, dilute as instructed and avoid swallowing.
Interaction:
Avoid concurrent use with other antiseptics or enzymatic wound agents, as interactions may reduce efficacy.
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone-iodine.
Patients with thyroid disorders, especially hyperthyroidism.
Not recommended for use in neonates or during pregnancy without medical advice.
Side Effects:
Possible side effects include local skin irritation, redness, itching, or burning sensation. Prolonged use over large areas may affect thyroid function.
