Prevention and long-term management of angina pectoris due to coronary artery disease.
Nitroglycerin, an organic nitrate, releases nitric oxide, leading to vasodilation of veins and arteries. It reduces myocardial oxygen demand by decreasing preload and afterload.
The usual dose is 1 tablet (2.6 mg) two to three times daily, or as directed by the physician. Dosage may vary depending on patient condition.
Should be taken orally with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet. Take at the same time(s) each day.
Concurrent use with phosphodiesterase inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil) can cause severe hypotension. May also interact with antihypertensives and alcohol.
Hypersensitivity to nitrates, severe hypotension, increased intracranial pressure, and recent use of PDE5 inhibitors.
Common: Headache, dizziness, flushing.
Less common: Hypotension, reflex tachycardia, nausea.
Use in pregnancy only if clearly necessary. Caution is advised during breastfeeding, as it's not known if nitroglycerin passes into breast milk.
Avoid abrupt withdrawal. Tolerance may develop with continuous use. Caution in patients with glaucoma, anemia, or hypotension. Regular blood pressure monitoring advised.
