Indicated for treatment of epilepsy (partial seizures), trigeminal neuralgia, and neuropathic pain.
Carbamazepine acts by stabilizing the inactivated state of voltage-gated sodium channels, reducing neuronal excitability and preventing seizure propagation.
Typical dosage is 200 mg twice or thrice daily, adjusted based on clinical response and plasma levels.
Administer orally with food to reduce gastrointestinal irritation. Tablets should not be crushed or chewed to maintain sustained release.
Interacts with CYP450 enzyme-inducing drugs, warfarin, oral contraceptives, and other antiepileptics. May reduce effectiveness of other drugs.
Hypersensitivity to Carbamazepine or tricyclic antidepressants, bone marrow depression, and acute intoxication with other CNS depressants.
Common: Dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision.
Serious: Aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
Use with caution during pregnancy; may cause fetal harm. Excreted in breast milk, breastfeeding should be avoided or monitored.
Monitor blood counts and liver function. Avoid abrupt withdrawal. Use cautiously in patients with cardiac or hepatic impairment.
Anticonvulsants
