Description
Melpred 8 mg is an oral corticosteroid medication containing methylprednisolone, manufactured by Pharmasia Limited. It is utilized to manage a variety of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions by suppressing inflammation and modulating the immune system. Commonly treated conditions include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, asthma, allergic reactions, and certain eye and skin disorders. The typical dosage ranges from 2 to 60 mg daily, depending on the severity of the condition, and is administered in divided doses. For allergic conditions, a tapering regimen may be employed over several days to minimize the risk of flare-ups. Melpred should be taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal irritation. Potential side effects include fluid retention, weight gain, high blood pressure, mood swings, and, with prolonged use, cataracts or osteoporosis. Abrupt discontinuation can lead to adrenal insufficiency; therefore, the dosage should be gradually reduced under medical supervision. It is classified as a pregnancy category C drug, indicating that its use during pregnancy should be considered only if the potential benefits justify the potential risks to the fetus.
