Indications:
PRAZOPRESS ER 5 MG is indicated for:
Management of essential hypertension
Congestive heart failure (as adjunctive therapy)
Raynaud’s disease
Symptomatic relief in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Post-traumatic stress disorder (off-label use)
Pharmacology:
Prazosin is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker. It relaxes the smooth muscle in blood vessels, lowering peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure. It also reduces urinary obstruction by relaxing the prostate and bladder neck.
Dosage & Administration:
Hypertension: Typically start with 1 mg at bedtime; maintenance dose 2–20 mg/day in divided or extended-release form
BPH or CHF: As per physician's guidance
Extended-release tablets should be swallowed whole; not crushed or chewed
Interaction:
May enhance the hypotensive effects of other antihypertensives
Caution with PDE5 inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil) – risk of severe hypotension
NSAIDs may reduce its effectiveness
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to Prazosin or related drugs
History of orthostatic hypotension
Side Effects:
Dizziness, drowsiness, headache
Palpitations, postural hypotension (especially first dose)
Weakness, nausea
Nasal congestion
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Should only be used when clearly needed and under medical supervision.
Precautions & Warnings:
Start with a low dose to prevent first-dose hypotension
Avoid activities requiring alertness (e.g., driving) after the first dose
Monitor blood pressure regularly
Caution in elderly and those with renal impairment
