Indications:
Rapasin is indicated for:
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure)
Management of urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Sometimes used in patients with heart failure or Raynaud’s disease
Pharmacology:
Prazosin is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker. It relaxes vascular smooth muscle, resulting in vasodilation and reduced peripheral resistance, thereby lowering blood pressure. In BPH, it relaxes the smooth muscles of the bladder neck and prostate, improving urine flow.
Dosage & Administration:
Initial dose usually 1 mg at bedtime (to avoid first-dose hypotension), gradually increased to maintenance dose
Typical maintenance dose: 2–20 mg/day in divided doses depending on patient response
Take with or without food, preferably at the same time daily
Swallow tablet whole with water
Interaction:
Enhanced hypotensive effect when combined with other antihypertensive agents
Caution with PDE-5 inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil) due to risk of significant blood pressure drop
NSAIDs may reduce antihypertensive effect
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to Prazosin or other quinazolines
History of orthostatic hypotension
Severe liver disease (use with caution)
Side Effects:
Common: Dizziness, headache, drowsiness, palpitations, weakness
Less common: Orthostatic hypotension (especially after first dose), nasal congestion, edema
Rare: Syncope, blurred vision
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician. Safety in lactation not fully established—consult doctor.
Precautions & Warnings:
First-dose effect: risk of sudden drop in blood pressure; initial dose should be taken at bedtime
Caution while driving or operating machinery
Gradual dose escalation recommended to minimize side effects
Regular monitoring of blood pressure is necessary
Therapeutic Class:
Alpha-1 adrenergic blocker
Storage Conditions:
Store below 30°C, in a dry place away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
