Indications:
Linax is indicated for:
Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, to improve glycemic control
Can be used as monotherapy or in combination with metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin
Pharmacology:
Linagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It increases the levels of incretin hormones, which help regulate blood glucose by increasing insulin synthesis and decreasing glucagon levels in a glucose-dependent manner. It does not usually cause hypoglycemia.
Dosage & Administration:
Recommended dose: 5 mg once daily
Can be taken with or without food
No dosage adjustment required in patients with renal or hepatic impairment
Should be taken at the same time every day for best results
Interaction:
May enhance the hypoglycemic effect when used with insulin or sulfonylureas
Rifampin may decrease Linagliptin effectiveness
Caution with other antidiabetic agents to avoid hypoglycemia
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Linagliptin or any component of the formulation
Not for use in patients with type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis
Side Effects:
Common: Nasopharyngitis, cough, headache
Less common: Hypoglycemia (when used with sulfonylureas/insulin), pancreatitis (rare)
Rare: Allergic reactions including angioedema, urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician. Limited data on use during pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
Not for treatment of type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
Monitor blood glucose regularly
Discontinue if pancreatitis is suspected
Use with caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis
