Indications:
Empaglif is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is also used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.
Pharmacology:
Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It reduces reabsorption of filtered glucose in the kidneys and increases urinary glucose excretion, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.
Dosage & Administration:
The recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily, taken in the morning with or without food. Dose may be increased to 25 mg if necessary and tolerated.
Interaction:
May interact with diuretics, insulin or insulin secretagogues (increased risk of hypoglycemia), and drugs that affect renal function. Use with caution when combined with ACE inhibitors or ARBs.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or on dialysis. Also contraindicated in those with hypersensitivity to Empagliflozin.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include urinary tract infections, genital infections, increased urination, and dehydration. Rarely may cause ketoacidosis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential risks to the fetus. Breastfeeding is also not recommended while using Empagliflozin.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function before and during treatment. Advise patients to stay hydrated. Caution in patients with hypotension, history of urinary tract infections, or elderly.
Therapeutic Class:
SGLT2 inhibitors
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool and dry place below 30°C. Protect from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
