Indications:
GLUCOMET XR is indicated for:
Type 2 diabetes mellitus management
Adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control
May be used in combination with other antidiabetic agents
Pharmacology:
Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: Usually 500 mg once or twice daily with meals.
Extended-release tablets should be swallowed whole; do not crush or chew.
Dose adjusted based on glycemic response and tolerance.
Interaction:
May interact with cationic drugs eliminated by renal tubular secretion (e.g., cimetidine).
Use caution with contrast media containing iodine.
Contraindications:
Renal impairment
Metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis
Hypersensitivity to Metformin
Side Effects:
Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort
Rare: lactic acidosis (serious but rare)
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed and under medical supervision.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function periodically
Educate patients about signs of lactic acidosis
Adjust dose or discontinue prior to surgery or radiologic studies involving iodinated contrast
Therapeutic Class:
Biguanide oral hypoglycemic agent
