Hipomax 1 gm Tablet contains methenamine hippurate, a urinary antiseptic used for the prophylactic or suppressive treatment of frequently recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs) in adults and children over 12 years of age. It is typically administered after the initial infection has been eradicated by other appropriate antimicrobial agents. Methenamine works by being hydrolyzed to formaldehyde in acidic urine, which exerts antibacterial activity against various pathogens, including E. coli, enterococci, and staphylococci. The effectiveness of Hipomax depends on maintaining an acidic urine pH, as the antibacterial activity is greater in acid urine. Therefore, patients are advised to avoid alkalinizing foods and medications and may require supplemental acidification of the urine if necessary.
