Primary, secondary, and tertiary hypothyroidism
Goiter treatment and suppression
Thyroid hormone replacement therapy
Management of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression in thyroid cancer
Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). It works by supplementing the deficient hormone, thereby regulating metabolism, energy production, and overall body functions that depend on thyroid hormone activity.
As prescribed by a registered physician.
Initial adult dose: 25–50 mcg daily, adjusted every 4–6 weeks based on TSH levels.
For elderly or cardiac patients: start with a lower dose.
Take orally on an empty stomach, preferably 30–60 minutes before breakfast. Swallow whole with water. Avoid taking other medications (especially calcium or iron) within 4 hours.
Reduced absorption with iron, calcium, aluminum-containing antacids
May increase effects of anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin)
Interaction with insulin and antidiabetic drugs may require dose adjustment
Estrogens can increase thyroxine-binding globulin, requiring higher doses
Untreated adrenal insufficiency
Acute myocardial infarction
Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Thyrotoxicosis not under control
Overdose may cause hyperthyroidism symptoms: palpitations, insomnia, irritability, weight loss
Common: headache, sweating, anxiety, menstrual irregularities
Rare: allergic rash, chest pain
Safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Dose may need adjustment during pregnancy. Should not be discontinued without medical advice.
Regular monitoring of thyroid function (TSH, T3, T4) is necessary
Use with caution in cardiovascular disease and elderly patients
Do not stop suddenly without consulting a physician
