Indications:
Cardex is indicated for:
Management of hypertension (high blood pressure)
Treatment of chronic heart failure (mild to moderate)
Improving survival and heart function after myocardial infarction (heart attack)
Pharmacology:
Carvedilol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker with additional alpha-1 blocking activity. It reduces heart rate, cardiac output, and peripheral vascular resistance, leading to decreased blood pressure and reduced workload on the heart.
Dosage & Administration:
Starting dose typically 6.25 mg twice daily
Dose may be adjusted based on patient response and tolerance
Take with food to minimize side effects like dizziness or hypotension
Swallow tablet whole with water
Interaction:
May increase effects of other antihypertensive drugs
Caution with calcium channel blockers (verapamil, diltiazem) due to risk of heart block
May mask hypoglycemia symptoms in diabetic patients
Use carefully with digoxin and certain antidepressants
Contraindications:
Bronchial asthma or other bronchospastic conditions
Severe bradycardia or heart block without pacemaker
Cardiogenic shock or decompensated heart failure requiring IV therapy
Hypersensitivity to carvedilol
Side Effects:
Common: Dizziness, fatigue, hypotension, bradycardia, weight gain
Rare: Hyperglycemia, visual disturbances, depression, worsening heart failure
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Unknown if excreted in human milk; use with caution during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG regularly
Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent rebound hypertension or arrhythmia
Use with caution in patients with diabetes, liver impairment, or pulmonary disease
Therapeutic Class:
Non-selective beta-blocker with alpha-1 blocking activity
Storage Conditions:
Store below 30°C, in a dry place away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
