Indications:
Salazine is indicated for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Pharmacology:
Salazine contains Sulfasalazine, which is metabolized in the colon to sulfapyridine and 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). 5-ASA reduces inflammation in the colon, while sulfapyridine has antibacterial effects.
Dosage & Administration:
Typical dose: 500 mg to 1 g two to four times daily depending on condition severity.
Should be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.
Interaction:
May interact with methotrexate, warfarin, and other immunosuppressants. Monitor for increased toxicity.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to sulfasalazine, salicylates, or sulfonamides.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, headache, rash, and abdominal discomfort. Rarely, blood disorders and liver toxicity.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if benefits outweigh risks. Excreted in breast milk; caution advised during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor blood counts and liver function regularly during therapy. Use cautiously in patients with G6PD deficiency.
Therapeutic Class:
Aminosalicylates (anti-inflammatory agents).
