Indications:
Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to improve urinary flow and reduce prostate size
Management of male pattern androgenetic alopecia (hair loss) in men
Pharmacology:
Finasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone responsible for prostate growth and hair follicle miniaturization. By lowering DHT levels, it reduces prostate size and slows hair loss.
Dosage & Administration:
Typical dose for BPH: 5 mg once daily
For hair loss, usually 1 mg once daily (but higher doses sometimes prescribed)
Tablets should be swallowed whole with water, with or without food
Interaction:
No significant drug interactions noted, but caution with other hormone therapies
Women who are or may be pregnant should avoid handling crushed or broken tablets
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Finasteride
Women, especially pregnant women, should not use or handle tablets due to risk of fetal harm
Side Effects:
Common: Decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorders
Rare: Breast tenderness or enlargement, rash, allergic reactions
May cause temporary hair shedding at the start of therapy
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant. Finasteride may cause abnormalities in male fetal genitalia. Not indicated for use in women or children.
Precautions & Warnings:
Effects on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels; inform doctor if PSA test is planned
Regular monitoring required in BPH patients
Discontinue if hypersensitivity or severe side effects occur
Therapeutic Class:
5-alpha-reductase inhibitors
Storage Conditions:
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
