Indications:
Treatment of intestinal nematode and some cestode infections including pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis), roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), hookworm, whipworm, threadworm, tapeworm, giardiasis, filariasis, and toxocariasis
Pharmacology:
Mebendazole, a synthetic broad‑spectrum benzimidazole, irreversibly inhibits microtubule polymerization in worms, disrupting glucose uptake and depleting energy stores
Dosage:
Ages ≥2 years:
Pinworms: 100 mg single dose.
Roundworm, hookworm, whipworm: 100 mg twice daily for 3 days.
Tapeworm/strongyloidiasis: 2 tablets twice daily for 3 days.
Repeat after 2 weeks if reinfection occurs
Administration:
Chew tablet thoroughly and swallow; can be taken with or without food .
Interaction:
Cimetidine may raise mebendazole levels; carbamazepine and phenytoin may reduce it
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to mebendazole or formulation components; not recommended for pregnant women
Side Effects:
Transient abdominal pain, diarrhea; rare hypersensitivity (rash, urticaria, angioedema), convulsions, neutropenia, agranulocytosis, hepatitis
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy; caution in breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings:
During prolonged therapy, assess hematopoietic and hepatic function; advise hygiene to prevent reinfection; caution in children <2 years
