Indications:
Propranol is indicated for treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial infarction prevention, migraine prophylaxis, and essential tremor.
Pharmacology:
Propranolol hydrochloride is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker that decreases heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output, leading to reduced blood pressure and oxygen demand of the heart.
Dosage & Administration:
Usual adult dose: 10 mg two to three times daily, adjusted according to patient response.
Can be taken with or without food.
Dose titration should be done carefully to avoid adverse effects.
Interaction:
May interact with calcium channel blockers, antiarrhythmics, insulin, and other antihypertensive agents, potentially enhancing effects or adverse reactions.
Contraindications:
Asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Severe bradycardia, heart block, or cardiogenic shock
Hypersensitivity to propranolol
Side Effects:
Common side effects include fatigue, dizziness, cold extremities, bradycardia, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed; may cause fetal bradycardia. Propranolol passes into breast milk, so caution is advised.
Precautions & Warnings:
Do not abruptly discontinue; taper dose gradually.
Use cautiously in patients with diabetes, thyroid disorders, or peripheral vascular disease.
Monitor heart rate and blood pressure regularly.
Therapeutic Class:
Beta-adrenergic blockers (Beta-blockers)
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
