Indications:
Thyrox is indicated for the treatment of hypothyroidism, goiter, thyroid hormone replacement therapy post-thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine treatment, and myxedema coma.
Pharmacology:
Thyrox contains Levothyroxine sodium, a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). It acts by restoring deficient thyroid hormone levels, thereby normalizing metabolic processes controlled by thyroid hormones.
Dosage & Administration:
Initial dose varies depending on age, weight, and severity. Typically 25-50 mcg daily for adults.
Dose is titrated based on clinical response and thyroid function tests.
Taken orally on an empty stomach, preferably 30-60 minutes before breakfast.
Interaction:
Absorption may be affected by calcium, iron supplements, antacids, and certain foods. Drugs like warfarin, insulin, and some antidepressants may require dose adjustment.
Contraindications:
Untreated thyrotoxicosis, acute myocardial infarction, and hypersensitivity to Levothyroxine.
Side Effects:
Symptoms of overdose include palpitations, tremors, nervousness, insomnia, weight loss, and heat intolerance. Proper dosing minimizes adverse effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Safe and necessary during pregnancy; requires close monitoring. Excreted in breast milk but considered safe for breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use cautiously in patients with cardiovascular disease. Regular monitoring of thyroid function tests is essential.
