Indications:
Syndopa is indicated for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and Parkinsonian syndromes. It helps control symptoms like tremor, stiffness, slowness of movement, and muscle rigidity.
Pharmacology:
Syndopa contains Levodopa, a precursor of dopamine, and Carbidopa, a dopa decarboxylase inhibitor.
Levodopa is converted to dopamine in the brain to replenish the deficient neurotransmitter.
Carbidopa prevents the peripheral breakdown of Levodopa, increasing its availability to the brain and reducing side effects like nausea.
Dosage & Administration:
Initial adult dose: Usually 1 tablet (Levodopa 100 mg + Carbidopa 10 mg) 2-3 times daily, as directed by physician.
Dose should be titrated slowly based on patient response.
Tablets should be swallowed whole with or without food, though taking with food may reduce nausea.
Interaction:
May interact with:
MAO inhibitors (risk of hypertensive crisis)
Antipsychotics (may reduce effectiveness)
Antihypertensives (additive hypotensive effect)
Iron supplements (may reduce absorption)
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Levodopa or Carbidopa
Narrow-angle glaucoma
History of malignant melanoma
Severe psychosis
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, orthostatic hypotension, dry mouth
Serious: Arrhythmias, dyskinesia, hallucinations, mood changes, sudden sleep onset
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Carbidopa/Levodopa can pass into breast milk—consult doctor before use during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor for psychiatric symptoms (hallucinations, depression)
Avoid abrupt withdrawal (risk of neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
Use cautiously in patients with heart, liver, or kidney disease
Therapeutic Class:
Anti-Parkinson's drugs (dopaminergic agents)
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
