Indications:
URSOCOL 300 MG is indicated for:

Dissolution of radiolucent cholesterol-rich gallstones in patients with a functioning gallbladder
Treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)
Hepatobiliary disorders associated with cystic fibrosis
Chronic liver disease with cholestasis

Pharmacology:
Ursodeoxycholic Acid is a naturally occurring bile acid that reduces the cholesterol content of bile by suppressing hepatic synthesis and secretion of cholesterol and by inhibiting its intestinal absorption. It also protects liver cells and improves bile flow, reducing inflammation and fibrosis.

Dosage & Administration:

Gallstone dissolution: 8–12 mg/kg/day in divided doses, continued for 6–24 months depending on stone size
PBC: 13–15 mg/kg/day in 2–4 divided doses
Children (cystic fibrosis-related liver disease): dose individualized based on body weight
Administer with food for better absorption

Interaction:

Bile acid sequestrants (e.g., cholestyramine) reduce absorption—administer with a gap of 2–4 hours
Aluminum-based antacids may reduce absorption
Estrogens and oral contraceptives may counteract the effects by increasing cholesterol saturation

Contraindications:

Acute inflammation of the gallbladder or biliary tract
Complete biliary obstruction
Calcified gallstones
Hypersensitivity to Ursodeoxycholic Acid
Pregnancy (unless clearly necessary)

Side Effects:

Diarrhea (most common)
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
Skin rash, pruritus (rare)
Transient elevation of liver enzymes

Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should be used in pregnancy only if clearly necessary and prescribed by a physician. Not recommended during breastfeeding unless the benefit outweighs the risk.
