Indications:
CLONIPRES 0.1 is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. It is also used in the management of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), menopausal hot flashes, and certain pain conditions.
Pharmacology:
Clonidine is a centrally acting alpha-2 adrenergic agonist. It lowers blood pressure by stimulating alpha-2 receptors in the brainstem, which reduces sympathetic outflow, leading to decreased peripheral resistance, heart rate, and blood pressure.
Dosage:
Initial adult dose for hypertension: 0.1 mg twice daily. Dosage may be adjusted by increments of 0.1 mg per day at weekly intervals. Maximum daily dose: 2.4 mg. For ADHD or menopausal symptoms, dosage must be individualized under physician guidance.
Administration:
Administer orally with or without food. Take at the same time each day. Do not stop abruptly due to risk of rebound hypertension.
Interaction:
May enhance the effects of CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives). Interacts with beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, and other antihypertensives. Abrupt withdrawal when on beta-blockers should be avoided.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Clonidine. Caution in severe bradyarrhythmia, recent myocardial infarction, or depression.
Side Effects:
Common: Dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation.
Serious: Bradycardia, hypotension, rebound hypertension, depression.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Clonidine is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be exercised during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid abrupt discontinuation. Monitor blood pressure and heart rate regularly. Caution in elderly, patients with heart block, and depression. May impair mental alertness.
Therapeutic Class:
Centrally Acting Antihypertensive Agents
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
