Description
Nortin 25 mg is a tricyclic antidepressant manufactured by Navana Pharmaceuticals Ltd., containing Nortriptyline Hydrochloride as its active ingredient. It is primarily used to treat depressive illnesses, panic disorder, and neuropathic pain. Nortriptyline works by increasing the synaptic concentration of serotonin and norepinephrine in the central nervous system by blocking their reuptake, thereby improving mood and alleviating pain. The typical adult dosage for depression starts at a low dose, which may be gradually increased to 75–100 mg daily in divided doses, with a maximum of 150 mg daily. For neuropathic pain, the initial dose is 10 mg daily at night, which can be increased if necessary to 75 mg daily under specialist supervision. In children aged 7 years and older, it is used for nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting), with doses ranging from 10 mg to 35 mg taken 30 minutes before bedtime, depending on age and weight. Common side effects include dry mouth, sedation, constipation, increased appetite, blurred vision, and, less frequently, rapid or irregular heartbeat. Patients should avoid alcohol, as it may exacerbate some side effects. Nortriptyline is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of its components, during the acute recovery period after myocardial infarction, and when used concomitantly with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Caution is advised in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, seizures, diabetes, glaucoma, urinary retention, prostatic hyperplasia, chronic constipation, or those with renal or hepatic impairment. As with any medication, it is essential to follow the prescribed dosage and consult a healthcare provider before starting or adjusting treatment.
