Indications:
DIETA 2 mg is indicated for:

  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (non-insulin dependent)

  • Monotherapy or combined therapy with Metformin or Insulin

  • Patients who cannot control blood sugar with diet and exercise alone

Pharmacology:
Glimepiride is a third-generation sulfonylurea that stimulates the release of insulin from functioning pancreatic beta cells. It also enhances the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin, resulting in improved glucose uptake and utilization. It provides long-lasting blood sugar control with a lower risk of hypoglycemia than older sulfonylureas.

Dosage:

  • Usual starting dose: 1–2 mg once daily with breakfast

  • Dose may be adjusted up to 8 mg per day based on glycemic response

  • Elderly or renal-impaired patients may require lower doses

Administration:

  • Take once daily with breakfast

  • Do not crush or chew the tablet

  • Maintain a regular meal pattern

Interaction:

  • Increased hypoglycemic effect when combined with NSAIDs, MAOIs, Insulin, and Beta-blockers

  • Effect may be reduced with corticosteroids, thiazide diuretics, and oral contraceptives

  • Alcohol may potentiate or weaken the blood glucose-lowering effect

Contraindications:

  • Type 1 diabetes

  • Diabetic ketoacidosis

  • Severe hepatic or renal impairment

  • Hypersensitivity to Glimepiride or other sulfonylureas

  • Pregnancy and lactation
