Indications:
METFO XR 1000 MG is used to improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
Pharmacology:
Contains Metformin hydrochloride extended-release which lowers glucose production in the liver, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity.
Dosage:
Usually taken once daily with the evening meal. Dose adjustments depend on patient response and physician’s instructions.
Administration:
Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew. Taking with food helps minimize gastrointestinal side effects.
Interaction:
Possible interactions with iodinated contrast media, cationic drugs eliminated by renal tubular secretion, and other antidiabetics. Inform your doctor about all medicines used.
Contraindications:
Not recommended for patients with severe renal impairment, metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, hepatic dysfunction, or hypersensitivity to metformin.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and rarely lactic acidosis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly necessary during pregnancy. Safety during breastfeeding not well established.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function regularly.
Avoid alcohol to reduce risk of lactic acidosis.
Discontinue before iodinated contrast studies.
