Indomethacin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, reducing the formation of prostaglandins which mediate inflammation, pain, and fever. The sustained-release (SR) formulation provides a prolonged therapeutic effect and improved patient compliance.
Usual adult dose: 75 mg once or twice daily, depending on the severity of symptoms
Take with meals or milk to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort
Do not crush or chew the capsule; swallow whole with water
Dose should be adjusted by a physician as per individual response
Caution with anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) due to increased bleeding risk
May reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive agents
Increased nephrotoxicity risk with ACE inhibitors, diuretics, or other NSAIDs
Avoid concomitant use with other NSAIDs
Hypersensitivity to indomethacin or any NSAID
Active or history of peptic ulcer or GI bleeding
Severe hepatic, renal, or cardiac dysfunction
Asthma triggered by aspirin or NSAIDs
Perioperative pain in CABG surgery
Common: Heartburn, abdominal discomfort, headache, dizziness
Serious: GI bleeding or ulcer, elevated liver enzymes, kidney impairment, cardiovascular events
CNS: Drowsiness, confusion, especially in elderly
Pregnancy: Avoid, particularly in third trimester due to risk of fetal harm
Lactation: Use with caution; consult a doctor before breastfeeding
Use lowest effective dose for shortest possible time
Regular monitoring of liver and kidney function during prolonged therapy
Increased risk of cardiovascular thrombotic events with long-term use
Caution advised in elderly and patients with pre-existing GI or cardiac conditions
