Indications:
DIETA 1 mg is indicated for:
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (non-insulin dependent)
As monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetics (e.g., Metformin, Insulin)
Pharmacology:
Glimepiride is a third-generation sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin secretion from functioning pancreatic beta cells. It also increases insulin sensitivity at peripheral tissues. It has a long duration of action with less risk of hypoglycemia compared to older sulfonylureas.
Dosage:
Initial dose: 1 mg once daily with breakfast
May be increased gradually based on blood glucose response (max 8 mg/day)
Dose adjustment required in elderly and renal impairment
Administration:
Take orally with breakfast
Do not skip meals
Swallow tablet whole with water
Interaction:
Enhanced effect with NSAIDs, insulin, MAOIs, and beta-blockers
Reduced effect with corticosteroids, diuretics, and thyroid products
Alcohol increases risk of hypoglycemia
Contraindications:
Type 1 diabetes
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Severe renal or hepatic dysfunction
Hypersensitivity to Glimepiride or other sulfonylureas
Pregnancy and lactation
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
Hypoglycemia
Headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Rare but serious:
Liver dysfunction
Allergic skin reactions
Blood disorders (e.g., leukopenia)
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated during pregnancy; insulin is preferred
Not recommended during lactation due to potential risk to infant
Precautions & Warnings:
Regularly monitor blood glucose
Caution in patients with renal or liver impairment
Educate patient about symptoms of hypoglycemia
Avoid alcohol
