Pharmacology:
HPR (Hydroxypropyl Rifampicin) is a rifamycin antibiotic that inhibits DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in bacterial cells, preventing RNA synthesis and thus bacterial replication and growth. It is bactericidal and widely used in tuberculosis treatment.
Dosage:
Typical adult dose: 10 mg/kg once daily or as prescribed by physician
Duration and dosage depend on the type and severity of infection
Always follow the prescribed regimen strictly
Administration:
Take orally on an empty stomach for better absorption (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals)
Swallow whole with water
Do not skip doses
Interaction:
Induces liver enzymes; may reduce effectiveness of other drugs like oral contraceptives, warfarin, antiretrovirals
Caution with other hepatotoxic drugs
Inform physician about all medications to avoid interactions
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Rifampicin or rifamycin derivatives
