Indications:
METFO 500 MG is indicated for glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
Pharmacology:
Contains Metformin hydrochloride, which decreases hepatic glucose production, reduces intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues.
Dosage:
Typically taken once or twice daily with meals. Dose adjustments depend on blood glucose monitoring and physician’s advice.
Administration:
Swallow whole with water. Do not crush or chew the tablet. Taking with food reduces gastrointestinal side effects.
Interaction:
May interact with iodinated contrast media, cationic drugs eliminated by renal tubular secretion, and other antidiabetic drugs. Inform your doctor of all medications.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hepatic disease, or known hypersensitivity to metformin.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and rarely lactic acidosis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Safety during breastfeeding is not well established.
Precautions & Warnings:
Regularly monitor renal function.
Avoid alcohol to reduce risk of lactic acidosis.
Discontinue before iodinated contrast procedures.
