Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Used when diet and exercise alone are insufficient to control blood sugar
May be prescribed as monotherapy or combined with other antidiabetic agents
VIDA PLUS 500 mg typically contains Metformin Hydrochloride as the active ingredient. Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.
Starting dose usually 500 mg once or twice daily with meals
Dose can be adjusted according to glycemic response, up to a maximum recommended dose
Should be taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects
Use with caution with other drugs affecting blood sugar such as insulin or sulfonylureas (may cause hypoglycemia)
May interact with contrast agents used in imaging, increasing risk of lactic acidosis
Avoid alcohol or limit intake to reduce risk of side effects
Severe renal impairment
Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis
Hypersensitivity to metformin
Conditions associated with hypoxia (e.g., heart failure, respiratory failure)
Common: Gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort
Rare but serious: Lactic acidosis, vitamin B12 deficiency with long-term use
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed and under doctor’s supervision
Lactation: Metformin is excreted in breast milk but considered safe; consult doctor
Monitor renal function before and during therapy
Use cautiously in elderly and those with risk factors for lactic acidosis
Ensure adequate hydration to reduce risk of kidney-related side effects
