Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Peptic ulcers (gastric and duodenal ulcers)
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (gastric acid hypersecretion)
Erosive esophagitis
Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in the stomach lining, leading to reduced acid production.
Typical dose: 20 mg once daily before a meal
Duration depends on condition; commonly 4 to 8 weeks for ulcer healing
Can be taken with or without food
May reduce absorption of drugs requiring acidic environment (e.g., ketoconazole, atazanavir)
Can increase serum levels of digoxin and warfarin; monitor accordingly
Avoid concomitant use with rilpivirine-containing products
Hypersensitivity to rabeprazole or other PPIs
Co-administration with rilpivirine
Common: Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain
Rare: Vitamin B12 deficiency with long-term use, interstitial nephritis
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed, consult doctor
Lactation: Excretion in breast milk unknown; caution advised
Monitor for symptoms of gastric malignancy before and during treatment
Long-term use may increase risk of fractures and infections like Clostridium difficile
Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent rebound acid hypersecretion
