Indications:
METFO XR 750 is indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, to improve glycemic control when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
Pharmacology:
Contains Metformin hydrochloride extended-release, which decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.
Dosage:
Typically taken once daily with the evening meal. Dose may be adjusted according to blood glucose levels and physician’s recommendation.
Administration:
Swallow whole with water. Do not crush or chew the tablet. Take with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Interaction:
May interact with cationic drugs eliminated by renal tubular secretion, iodinated contrast agents, and other antidiabetic drugs. Inform your doctor about all medications.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with renal impairment, metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hepatic dysfunction, or hypersensitivity to metformin.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include gastrointestinal upset such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and rarely lactic acidosis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Safety in breastfeeding is not well established.
Precautions & Warnings:

Monitor renal function regularly.

Avoid alcohol consumption as it increases risk of lactic acidosis.

Discontinue before any radiologic studies involving iodinated contrast.
