Indications:
Used to treat hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. Also prescribed to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and angina in high-risk patients.
Pharmacology:
Atorvastatin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme responsible for cholesterol synthesis in the liver, leading to decreased LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels.
Dosage:
Typically, 10 mg once daily, with or without food. Dose may be adjusted based on patient response, up to 80 mg daily.
Administration:
Administer orally once daily, preferably at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without meals.
Interaction:
May interact with certain antibiotics, antifungals, cyclosporine, and grapefruit juice. Caution with other lipid-lowering agents.
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to atorvastatin, active liver disease, pregnancy, and lactation.
Side Effects:
Common: headache, muscle pain, nausea. Rare: myopathy, liver enzyme elevation, rhabdomyolysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential risk to the fetus and infant.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor liver function tests before and during treatment. Advise patients to report unexplained muscle pain or weakness.
