Indications:
Treatment of chronic iron overload due to repeated blood transfusions in conditions like thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, and other chronic anemias.
Pharmacology:
Deferasirox is an oral iron chelator that binds excess iron and facilitates its excretion mainly via the feces.
Dosage:
Dosage is individualized based on serum ferritin levels and patient’s clinical response; typically 20 mg/kg once daily.
Administration:
Oral use; take on an empty stomach or at least 30 minutes before food; do not crush or chew tablets if using.
Interaction:
May interact with antacids, polyvalent cations, and other drugs affecting kidney or liver function.
Contraindications:
Severe renal or hepatic impairment, hypersensitivity to Deferasirox.
Side Effects:
Common: nausea, abdominal pain, skin rash; serious: renal and hepatic toxicity.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed; consult physician.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal and liver function regularly; discontinue if severe toxicity occurs.
