Indications:
Used for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Pharmacology:
Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It blocks leukotriene D4 in the lungs, reducing inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus production.
Dosage:
One 10 mg tablet once daily, preferably in the evening, or as prescribed by the physician.
Administration:
To be taken orally with or without food.
Interaction:
May interact with phenobarbital, rifampin, and other enzyme-inducing drugs that reduce its plasma concentration.
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to Montelukast or any component of the formulation.
Side Effects:
Headache, abdominal pain, dizziness, fatigue, rash, and in rare cases, mood or behavior changes.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician. No adequate data in pregnancy; caution advised.
Precautions & Warnings:
Not for use in acute asthma attacks. Behavioral and mood changes have been reported; monitor patients accordingly.
