Indications:
Indicated for the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, including prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm, and for the relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis in pediatric patients (typically ages 6 to 14).
Pharmacology:
Montelukast is a selective leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene CysLT1 receptor, thereby reducing inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus secretion in the airways.
Dosage:
Children 6–14 years: One 5 mg chewable tablet once daily in the evening, or as directed by the physician.
Administration:
To be chewed before swallowing; can be taken with or without food.
Interaction:
Minimal drug interactions, but use caution with enzyme inducers like phenobarbital or rifampin.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Montelukast or any of its components.
Side Effects:
Headache, abdominal pain, dizziness, hyperactivity, skin rash, and in rare cases, behavioral changes (aggression, depression).
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Generally used in pediatric patients; use in pregnancy or lactation should follow medical advice.
Precautions & Warnings:
Not to be used for acute asthma attacks. Behavioral and neuropsychiatric events have been reported, especially in children; monitor carefully.
