Indications:
Used to treat high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), mixed dyslipidemia, and to prevent cardiovascular complications.
Pharmacology:
Atorvastatin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, reducing cholesterol synthesis in the liver, lowering LDL and triglycerides, and increasing HDL cholesterol.
Dosage:
Typically, 20 mg orally once daily. Dose may be adjusted every 4 weeks up to 80 mg depending on patient response.
Administration:
Orally with or without food, preferably in the evening.
Interaction:
May interact with cyclosporine, certain antibiotics (clarithromycin), antifungals, fibrates, and grapefruit juice.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to atorvastatin, active liver disease, pregnancy, and lactation.
Side Effects:
Muscle pain, headache, diarrhea, liver enzyme elevation, rarely rhabdomyolysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not to be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Liver function monitoring recommended. Use cautiously in liver impairment and heavy alcohol users.
