Indications:
Treatment of respiratory tract infections, skin infections, ear infections, and certain sexually transmitted diseases caused by susceptible bacteria.
Pharmacology:
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, leading to bacterial growth suppression.
Dosage:
Usually, 500 mg once daily for 3-5 days depending on infection severity and type.
Administration:
Oral administration with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.
Interaction:
May interact with antacids, warfarin, and other drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, history of liver disease related to prior azithromycin use.
Side Effects:
Common: nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain. Rare: liver toxicity, allergic reactions, QT prolongation.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Generally considered safe in pregnancy but consult a physician. Use cautiously during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor for signs of allergic reaction and liver dysfunction. Avoid use in patients with known QT prolongation.
