Indications:
Used for treating high cholesterol and mixed dyslipidemia. Also prescribed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with elevated lipid levels.
Pharmacology:
Atorvastatin inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, decreasing cholesterol production in the liver, resulting in lowered LDL and total cholesterol.
Dosage:
40 mg orally once daily. Dose adjustments may be required based on patient response and tolerance.
Administration:
Administer orally once daily, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.
Interaction:
May interact with antifungals, antibiotics, cyclosporine, and grapefruit juice. Caution with other lipid-lowering drugs.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with active liver disease, hypersensitivity to atorvastatin, pregnancy, and lactation.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, muscle pain, and nausea. Rarely, serious muscle problems and liver enzyme elevations may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential risks.
Precautions & Warnings:
Regular monitoring of liver enzymes and muscle symptoms is advised. Report muscle pain or weakness immediately.
